Tanais – the Mystery of the Ancient Town

Tanais is the largest archaeological museum-reserve in Russia situated 35 km from Rostov-on-Don.

Its territory of 3000 hectares hosts the ensemble of cultural and historical monuments belonging to different ages, from the Paleolithic age up to the XIX century. Tanais was the north-eastern outpost of Ancient Greece, dated to the III century BC. The settlement, the necropolis and other areas explored by the archaeologists are presented now as an open air museum
